Description
The Tiger SS20 Corrosion-Resistant Chain Block (Corrosion-Resistant Chain Version) is purpose-built for demanding marine, offshore, and coastal lifting operations where exposure to saltwater, humidity, and harsh weather would quickly degrade standard equipment. Manufactured in Tiger’s ISO9001-certified facility, this advanced hoist combines heavy-duty construction, low-maintenance operation, and industry-leading corrosion protection to deliver long service life and reliable performance in any environment.
Constructed from high-quality precision-machined steel, the SS20 offers a compact, lightweight design with outstanding durability and resistance to impact damage. Its low-headroom profile makes it ideal for restricted or confined installations, while every component is treated with Tiger’s proprietary corrosion protection system to ensure extended operational life.
At the core of this model is Tiger’s corrosion-resistant load chain, manufactured to Grade T or VH standards and conforming to EN818-7 and ISO 16872. This unique chain treatment provides superior resistance to oxidation and surface corrosion without compromising mechanical strength, making it perfectly suited for marine deck lifting, shipyard use, and offshore maintenance operations.
The SS20’s bonded marine friction discs deliver safe, controlled lifting and lowering in wet or submerged environments. Their grooved design disperses water effectively, preventing “aquaplaning”. This is a condition where a thin water layer between brake surfaces can cause loss of friction.
Unrivalled Safety & Performance
The SS20’s patented Quad Cam Pawl System ensures continuous engagement of at least one pawl at all times, maintaining a fully operational brake even in the unlikely event of spring failure. This innovation surpasses the requirements of BS 4898:1973, ensuring the brake remains engaged under all operating conditions.
An 8-point multi-start pinion shaft significantly improves brake responsiveness and efficiency compared to traditional 4-point designs, offering up to 100% faster brake reaction time. The system guarantees precise load control and enhanced safety during lifting, lowering, and load-holding operations.
The EZ Check hook design enables quick inspection to confirm whether the hoist has been previously overloaded, enhancing safety assurance during periodic checks. Heavy-duty spring latch kits engage fully into the recessed hook nose to secure loads even under lateral tension.
Corrosion Protection for Marine Environments
Every SS20 component is treated for maximum resistance to corrosion. This includes:
-Two-layer surface protection system: electroplating base + C5M-grade powder-coated finish (ISO 12944 compliant).
-Phosphor-bronze bearings: engineered for saltwater resistance and superior wear performance.
-Stainless steel fasteners and fittings: throughout key assemblies for long-term durability.
-Unique corrosion-protected chain treatment: providing superior protection over standard zinc finishes while maintaining high tensile strength.
These features make the SS20 corrosion-resistant chain model ideal for use in multi-immersion environments, shipyards, docks, coastal facilities, and offshore rigs, where standard hoists would suffer from rapid corrosion.
Optional Overload Protection
This variant can be supplied with a slipping clutch overload limiter, tested and verified by DNV GL according to NORSOK R-002. When the load limit is exceeded, the clutch slips to prevent further lifting, protecting both the operator and the equipment. Lowering the load remains possible under full control.
Environmental and Operational Performance
The SS20 is tested for multi-immersion applications, verified for up to 54 days of saltwater exposure when used according to Tiger’s Multi-Immersion Instruction Manual. Internal and external corrosion testing confirms over 1500 hours protection under ASTM B117 salt spray conditions.
It performs reliably across a temperature range of -40°C to +80°C, with an optional ultra-low temperature variant (-60°C to +80°C) for Arctic and deep-water environments.
The SS20 can also be safely used for “fleeting”, “drifting”, and “cross-hauling” operations up to 60° from vertical without deration. This is a unique capability supported by Tiger’s advanced brake and hand wheel design.
Testing and Certification
Each SS20 hoist undergoes an extensive testing programme, including:
-Proof load testing at 1.5 × WLL
-Light load testing at 2% WLL
-Chain anchorage testing at 2.5 × WLL
-Continuous cyclic testing exceeding 1500 cycles
-Ultimate strength testing at 4 × WLL
All units are supplied with a Test Certificate and Declaration of Conformity compliant with Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.
