What is the difference between a LOLER inspection and an in-use inspection?
A LOLER inspection is a statutory thorough examination of lifting equipment carried out by a competent person to ensure compliance with the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER). It confirms the equipment is safe, correctly rated and fit for continued use.
-
How often must lifting equipment be inspected?
Lifting equipment must be inspected at statutory intervals defined under LOLER. Typically:
- Every 6 months for equipment used to lift people and loose lifting equipment
- Every 12 months for lifting equipment and accessories
- At shorter intervals if risk assessment requires
-
Does onsite crane inspection fall under LOLER?
Yes. Overhead cranes and hoists used at work must undergo regular thorough examination under LOLER and may also require inspection under PUWER.
-
Who can carry out a lifting equipment inspection?
Inspections must be conducted by a competent person with appropriate training, technical knowledge and experience to identify defects and assess safety risks.
