The ISO 12944 C5M paint system provides advanced surface protection against corrosion, abrasion, and impact, while internal components receive Tiger’s unique anti-corrosion treatment. Stainless steel fittings and bronze bearings are used throughout to prevent degradation and ensure long-term performance.

This variant features a precision-calibrated high-strength alloy steel load chain, manufactured to Grade T or VH standards (EN818-7 / ISO 16872), providing reliable load handling across a WLL range from 0.5t up to 20t. The result is a chain block that excels in both marine deck operations and heavy-duty industrial lifting, where exposure to moisture and harsh conditions is routine.

Advanced Safety Systems
The SS20 Steel Chain model is equipped with Tiger’s patented Quad Cam Pawl System, ensuring at least one brake pawl remains engaged at all times. This dual-pawl design eliminates the risk of brake failure, even if a pawl spring should fail, meeting and exceeding the standards of BS 4898:1973.

The bonded marine friction discs are designed for saltwater use, featuring a grooved surface that effectively disperses water between friction interfaces. This prevents aquaplaning and guarantees consistent braking performance in wet or submerged conditions.

To enhance control and reduce effort, the hoist incorporates an 8-point multi-start pinion shaft, increasing brake efficiency by up to 100% over traditional 4-point designs. This engineering refinement allows for smoother load transitions, faster engagement, and safer operation across all load levels.

Corrosion-Resistant Design
The SS20’s two-layer protection system combines:
Electroplating base coating for superior adhesion and initial corrosion resistance.
Powder-coated outer finish with a sand-texture layer for exceptional durability and impact protection.

All exposed fasteners are stainless steel, while internal moving parts receive Tiger’s specialised anti-corrosion coating. Phosphor-bronze and DU® self-lubricating bearings are used in critical load areas, providing excellent wear resistance, low friction, and zero maintenance under extended use.

These features ensure that even when used in marine deck or dockside environments, where airborne salt and moisture are constant, the SS20 Steel Chain maintains its mechanical integrity and smooth operation.

Operational Capability
Designed for versatility, the SS20 can safely perform “drifting”, “cross-hauling”, and “fleeting” operations up to 60° from the vertical without deration. Its deep-profile hand wheel ensures consistent chain feed, eliminating the risk of twisting or snagging when operated at an angle.

The EZ Check safety hooks allow operators and inspectors to quickly determine if the hoist has ever been overloaded, simply by checking the spacing between the marked indicators. The drop-forged and heat-treated alloy hooks are fitted with heavy-duty spring latch kits that fully engage into the recessed nose for secure load retention.

Optional slipping clutch overload protection is available and has been DNV GL verification tested in accordance with NORSOK R-002. This prevents further lifting when the rated load limit is exceeded while allowing safe lowering of the load.
Testing and Certification
Each SS20 unit undergoes a comprehensive quality assurance and testing process, including:
Proof load testing at 1.5 × WLL
Light load testing at 2% WLL
Chain anchorage testing at 2.5 × WLL
Continuous cycle testing exceeding 1500 cycles
Ultimate strength testing at 4 × WLL

Each hoist is supplied with a Declaration of Conformity and full test certificate in compliance with the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, verifying adherence to BS EN 13157:2004+A1:2009, ANSI/ASME B30.16, AS 1418.2, and SANS 1594.
